Ever since the merger between Sharks Football Club and Dolphins Football Club into Rivers United, this is the first time that the Rivers State based club will lift the Nigeria Professional League trophy as champions in front of their home fans in Rivers State.
After seeing off stiff competition from Plateau United, and the points dropped from the Jos club on match day 34, Rivers United were already informed they would be champions with 13 points ahead with only four games to spare.

The rivers state outfit had one of the best campaigns ever in a historic league season that will see them represent Nigeria in the continental competitions; they had the:
