CELIBACY RULE AND THE CATHOLIC PRIEST

Following the recent trend in social vices going on in the Catholic communion, many persons have suggested that it's time the 'Celibacy' clause which stands as part of the requirements that certifies an individual as a priest be highly considered.

It boils down to the fact that most catholic priest fail to meet up to the standard of keeping themselves faithful and committed to their calling. Part of which is having secret families; it is rumoured that most priest get married secretly and have children outside of the knowledge of the church. An abominable act which is tantamount to the dismissal from priesthood.

'There is no smoke without fire' as many have also suggested that some of these priests engage in several immoral acts which includes: rape, secret love affairs and child molestation, generally known as pedophilia.

Following recent happenings, part of it was discussed on a social media forum. Here you have a sample of an eye-witness report of what is really going down behind scene.
Regarding the issue on ground, should it be considered that the 'celibacy' clause be removed from part of the requirements that makes one a bonafide priest? In the Catholic communion, the term 'celibate' is sacred, it is a mantra that keeps one holy and acceptable before God; more-so, for a priest who wants to serve in the vineyard of the most High. Therefore, many persons have opined that removing the celibacy clause will not only mar the integrity of the catholic church but it will lead to financial, economical and reputation destruction.

'The Priesthood is a vocation, it is a sacrament, just like the Holy matrimony. Before you're called to become a priest, you have years of schooling with intense studies to understand the rubrics of the vocation. If you can't keep to this part of the evangelical counsels, then you don't have any right to become a priest". (Unpopular opinion) - Chisom Cheexom (Computer Engineer, Catholic member. England)

The Anglican and the Catholic share one thing in common, the Seminary and Theological school, just that the Anglican pastors marry; which is usually completed before you become a full-blown ordained pastor in the ministry.

'Celibacy is what makes priesthood, if it is done away with, then, becoming a priest will be a thing for every Tom, Dick and Harry. Celibacy makes it possible for only those who have the calling.'  (Unpopular opinion) - Jay Amuzie (Accountant, Project /Financial Manager. Lagos)

Sometime last year, the headquarters of the Catholic Communion, the Vatican City in Rome, Italy, through the office of the Pope once suggested that they're looking into the possibility of making 'Celibacy' an option for intending priests. Presently, there is a campaign going on in Slovakia by catholic priests challenging the rule of celibacy.

'We are all humans, we are sexual beings, as much as we are spiritual beings. The sexual suppression seems difficult for most priests, hence the rape cases and what not emerges. The church should consider lifting the celibacy clause. Having sex has never stopped GOD from hearing our prayers.' - (Unpopular Opinion) - Evelyn O.G (Wedding Planner. Abuja)

There's a popular saying that what is good for the goose is equally good for the gander, but in this case, it's the reverse. Therefore, celibacy is not for everybody. It is a thing of choice; being a priest might be envisaged as a career path many have chosen whilst others were called. Maturing into celibacy is a thing of the mind coupled with a few principles here and there backed by the grace and word of GOD. Neither is priesthood a necessity nor a career path.

'Even some married religious leaders engage in several forms of sexual immoralities atleast from the numerous eye-witness reports that makes the rounds in the news every now and then; nobody forces anyone to become a priest.' - (Unpopular opinion) - Ikomba Akam (Software Developer, Entrepreneur. Lagos)

Part of the debate suggests that child rape is one major social vice which tops the list of crimes emanating from the territory of the Catholic church. Recently, a Pennsylvanian church recorded a case of child abuse by a catholic priest which is still under investigation. Not mentioning the others that has taken place in Michigan, USA and Makurdi, Nigeria.

Will 'optional' celibacy put an end to child rape???

Will scrapping the CELIBACY clause put an end to several cases of immoral crimes???

These days many parents force their children into priesthood and nunnery because of the pride that is associated with the position, this singular action has raised eyebrows to whether being a priest is either a calling or a career path.

But whichever angle you're looking at it from, they have to adhere to the rules and regulations of the communion and above all: obey the laws and guidance of the Bible while discharging their duties. However, following the recent trend, the rule is said to be under deliberation after some priests in the UK and Britain decided to get married.
