The Anglican Church And The Case of Unpaid Wages.

Held in high esteem, robbed in white, black casor, the white colar, noble, meek, a gem to the congregation; describes the typical Anglican pastor. Their measure of near perfect lives, pragmatism and approach towards their faith is a physical connotation before the human eyes.

It is a general phenomenon that pastors in the Anglican communion commit to their oath of office, a condition that reads except for professionalism, where an individual applies as a PART TIME pastor: he has to be committed to the church, it's doctrine and her congregation.

This insinuating statement means that the full-time Anglican pastor therefore has no leverage of extra income, reason being that he has no permission to do any form of work whatsoever outside the church. An addendum that means his source of livelihood lies on and only from the church.

To justify this notion, will it be fair to the average Anglican pastor to be owed his monthly stipend??  Looking at it from the perspective where he doesn't have anything to fall back to, does he deserve his wages?  

Well, in recent times, that's the case of some churches, especially, ones established in the rural areas and in rare cases, others in and within the urban settlement. Pastors serving in rural churches have their work cut out short when it comes to getting paid. The situation which leaves the pastor physically and emotionally unbalanced. A mirror of uncared for, in need and feeding from hand to mouth; perceived by the careful eye. Often times, when nothing seem to be working out, they resort to forced retirement from service. 

Head of churches (Dioceses) and the parish church committees (PCC) has it as an obligation to see to the welfare of their pastors, either full-time or part-time and make sure they lack nothing. But, it is becoming rather flagitious for those at the helm of affairs to either intentionally or otherwise act unfazed in settling pastors' bills; an excuse of  'No Money'.

Serving in the vineyard of the Lord is a commitment, moreso, for an Anglican pastor who rarely engage in intra-pupit visitations. His days and every moment is mostly spent in his church of primary assignment.

It is worthy of note that these full-time pastors are shouldered with the responsibility of generating income for the church which will serve as a source to which they are paid from. What sources?  Projects, fund-raising programmes and other pet projects to raise income for the church. 

It is actually a truism that the level and status of a congregation determines the availability and inflow of funds to settle bills and carry out church projects; but, is it a worthy yardstick to measure the worth of the servant in the Lord's vineyard?

The Holy Bible stated it clearly, that a workman rightfully deserves his wages. Irrespective of the circumstances at hand.

Would it be out of shape if churches indulge in projects they can handle and finish without being financially incapacitated?

Maintain an equilibrium that allows you manage the affairs of the church and same time pay the wages of your workers, which is: solely,  the number one PRIORITY.

The average Anglican Pastor and church worker deserve their wages. It's a non-negotiable term that is in line with the christiandom, the little compensation to service.

It's worrisome that most retired Full-time Anglican Pastors have nothing to fall back to. Will it be out of place if the clause is revisited? Should a pastor engage in money making businesses and ventures whilst serving the church?

If implemented could be a support in disguise to both the church and the Pastor. A retirement plan is one worth considering.
