The DFB Cup resumes this week and games will be played on Tuesday and Wednesday. The action will involve 16sides from different divisions of German league and with this the German Football Association presents most important facts and recent developments for the remaining eight games.
FACTS
74th edition of the DFB Cup:
The Cup competition originated back in
1935, when it was known as the Tschammer Cup. That makes this season the
74th year of the competition’s existence. 25 different teams have
managed to win the competition over the previous 73 years of the
tournament.
The Magical Pairings:
Hamburger SV vs. 1. FC Köln
FC Bayern Munich vs. VfL Wolfsburg
Borussia Dortmund vs. Hertha BSC
- This round features teams from the Bundesliga competing side by side.
- FC Astoria Walldorf are the last amateur club remaining and they will host second division side Arminia Bielefeld.
- A third league team is also still in action in the form Sportfreunde Lotte, who will take on TSV 1860 Munich.
- And finally, three games feature a top flight side against a second division club: Greuther Fürth vs. Borussia Mönchengladbach, SV Sandhausen vs. FC Schalke 04 and Hannover 96 vs. Eintracht Frankfurt.
The recent developments in the DFB CUP:
1. Hawk-Eye:
The Hawk eye will be installed in three Bundesliga stadia where the DFB Cup game will be played and will be used for the first time. The stadia includes Munich [Allianz Arena], Hamburg [Volksparkstadion], and Dortmund [Signal Idunal Park, Westfalenstadion].

There are some important parameters for the hawk-eye system’s usage: first, the technology has to be installed in the stadium, which fundamentally only applies to the 18 top flight stadiums. And second, the ball used by the home team must be compatible with the goal line technology.

From this point of the competition onwards, any game that enters the extra-time mark will see teams permitted to use the fourth substitution..
The path:
In order to win the DFB Cup a team has to prevail from six knockout games. If a game is tied after 90 minutes, a winner is determined through extra time or a penalty shootout.
