SEVILLA AND MONCHI PART WAYS AFTER 17 YEARS

Sevilla Sporting Director Ramón Rodríguez, a.k.a. Monchi has parted ways with the club after his announcement during an organized press conference. He was given a priceable farewell gift on Saturday when the team played host to relegation strugglers Deportivo La Coruna in La Liga on matchday 30. A game they went on to win 4-1 with goals from Jovetic, Sarabia, Angel Correia and Wissam Ben Yedder.

Before the kick-off, Monchi was given a standing ovation and a deserved honour as he walked unto the pitch decorated with the trophies the club won during his reign as Sporting Director. Monchi's Sevilla reign brought glory to the club with several players joining and leaving the club at the time. The club was successful and was an European Stalwart winning five Europa Leagues, Spanish Super Cup, Two Copas Del Rey, Uefa Super Cup and other minor International trophies.

Ramón Rodríguez concludes his time as sporting director, after 17 seasons that have transformed Sevilla FC forever.
His early days
He arrived at Sevilla Atlético in the summer of 1988 as a teenager full of dreams. But the future was to offer him a series of successes away from the field of play. This is the story of Ramón Rodríguez Verdejo, Monchi...29 years in Nervión, 9 seasons in the first team, 115 matches defending the Sevilla FC goal, a season as delegate and 17 as Sporting Director...Sevilla FC could not be understood without Monchi because Monchi is Sevilla FC.

When he was crying inconsolably at the Carlos Tartiere, at possibly his worst moment as a professional at the club, Monchi could not imagine that life would offer him such a reprise. But it did. Not on the pitch, but from the office, directing the footballing plans of the club thanks to the confidence of Roberto Alés, who saw what no one, not even Monchi himself, suspected. With Monchi arrived Caparrós and a promotion that gave life to a team going backwards. The following years brought a breath of fresh air and the Lion of San Fernando, with the arrival of José María del Nido and with the help of Juando Ramos, managed to meet even the highest expectations. The impossible signings arrived and an influx of success came, European and national titles, and Sevilla, the same team that was losing its footing towards the end of the 90s, became the best team in the world. And tears turned to joy and cries of glory.

Not everything was perfect on the way, there were less successful seasons and critical moments, but amongst Monchi's many talents is the ability to reinvent himself, as he demonstrated in the summer of 2014 during which he changed everything to make sure that, in reality, nothing changed. And this time with José Castro and Unai Emery, his achievements once again took Sevilla FC, his Sevilla, to the summit of Europe. And Monchi says farewell from the summit with the eternal gratitude of the club that he lifted and honoured with his talent.

The first 17 years of the twentieth century will always be remembered as the Monchi Era, the era in which Sevilla FC rediscovered the hunger that was lost in the second half of the previous century. With Monchi, with the Lion of San Fernando, Sevilla FC roared once again. 879 matches, 440 victories, 9 titles...Monchi's numbers are legendary. Monchi is a LEGEND.

When the news broke
After news broke on Thursday evening that Ramón Rodríguez Verdejo, Monchi, will leave Sevilla FC at the end of the season, the General Sporting Director sat down before the assembled media at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán on Friday to discuss the reasons behind his departure.

Visibly emotional throughout the press conference, Monchi explained his motives for leaving after 17 years in charge of recruitment at the club.

"My reasons are to do with exhaustion," he said. "I have been here for 29 years, 17 as Sporting Director, with a very high level of pressure.

"I wanted to leave in May and I was wrong, in timing and in manner, in every sense. But my feelings remained. I don't have any other reasons. It's uniquely and exclusively down to the need for a change.

"And the effort that the club has made to keep me here is beyond words. Until you leave, you don't realise the affection that people have for you. They've tried to convince me in every way possible, with care, lots of care, and economically too.

"In fact, I can say that an offer has been made to me that I would never be offered anywhere other than here.

"Again, it's a personal matter of a need for change. It can't be considered a failure by the club because it was down to me, there was nothing that they could have done to convince me."
Monchi continued: "I can't say 'goodbye' here, I will always say 'see you soon'. I don't know what will happen in the future but I hope that everything goes well and that what I've put in place here stays in the memory and is erased by whatever comes next.

"But if Sevilla FC were to be so kind as to call me because they needed me, I would have no doubt, even if they needed me to paint the lines on the pitch."

He said: "It's true that I was in London and in this process I will get things wrong, I'm sure, and I have made mistakes, but I don't have anything sorted with any other teams.

"I have to choose well where I go and that is what I am doing, I am young and I have to work."

He continued: "I have an objective in leaving the club, and it is to thank everyone who has helped me, everyone who has praised me, criticised me, understood me, not understood me, with whom I agreed or not.

"Every time that I have said something, I have always said it while thinking about Sevilla. At times knowing that I could bring about consequences, but always having in mind what was best for Sevilla."

And if you ask me about how this might affect the squad, the four captains are here. They know me and today I told them that if they want to help me, they will do that by winning the ten remaining games.

"Because if things go badly, lots of people will look at me. But I have chosen this time looking to cause as little damage as possible."
