CAF Launches the Africa Super League, Set to Kick off in August 2023

Recently, CAF has been working on a new league to ensure African football gets its recognition, prestige and reward for hard-work; that is why the CAF President Patrice Motsepe and his committee have come up with the African Super League (ASL). 

According to CAF President, the African Super League will contribute to ensuring that football on the African continent is managed and operated at the same professional, ethical and governance level as UEFA, CONMEBOL, CONCACAF and other federations.

What is the prize money of the ASL?

The prize money of the ASL will be $100 million, and the winner will be receiving $11.5 Million. Some of the funding from the Africa Super League will be used to allocate $1 million per annum to each of CAF’s 54 member countries, which is a total of $54 million per annum to develop football in African countries.

Other benefits of the Africa Super League

CAF will also receive $50 million per annum to develop football for boys and girls, to employ world class staff, to improve and to male all its other competitions attractive and appealing to football spectators, TV viewers, sponsors and other partners. 

The ASL will support the growth of club football, the construction and maintenance of football infrastructure and facilities as well as the training and the retention of football talents on the African continent.

When will the Africa Super League start?

The ASL will officially kick off in August 2023 and it will involve 24 clubs from 16 countries across the continent.

How will the ASL work?

It will involve 24 clubs from three regions; North, Central/West, Southern/East

8 clubs per region

Maximum 3 clubs per country

Over 16 countries representing approximately 1 billion people

What is the duration of the ASL competition?

It will be played within 10 months, from August to May

Maximum 21 matches played by the finalists

A relegation and promotion playoff
